The IDP Birdhouse

This art project combines micro-dioramas with a socially significant theme to create a powerful, emotionally charged sculpture. Its composition resembles a birdhouse, which symbolizes a temporary refuge; in this context, however, it becomes a metaphor for losing one’s home and being forced to adapt.

Inside, the micro-dioramas depict everyday domestic scenes—simple, ordinary moments that take on special meaning under new circumstances. They tell the stories of internally displaced persons, conveying the fragility of their situation, their struggle to maintain a sense of normalcy in difficult conditions, and the remarkable strength of human resilience.

The project aims to:

  • Draw attention to the challenges faced by displaced individuals
  • Prompt a rethinking of everyday scenes that, in the context of war, become testimonies of adaptation and hope
  • Evoke emotion and encourage viewers to reflect on loss, dignity, and humanity

“Shpakivnya VPO” (“The IDP Birdhouse”) is a story of the power of adaptation: of a temporary shelter that becomes a center of new meanings, and of how even the smallest details can tell a profound story.
